Eleven

Naomi jerked awake, a heavy crick in her neck when the metal doors banged open. Zoila and Kellen walked in, shoulders back and heads held high.

Buzz was with them, two cyborgs holding onto his arms. They looked the same as the beefed-up part human, part robot man that had been guarding Naomi all night.

Knowing he was alive and seemingly okay was the only reason Naomi could inhale a proper breath.

Though, he didn’t look remotely happy as he was led forward, a deep, purple bruise forming on his cheek and around his eye.

Right, so not exactly unharmed.

She was proud that he’d had some fight in him, but her heart ached knowing he’d been hurt.

And it also ached when she saw how he refused to look at her.

She swallowed hard.

“Any progress?” Zoila asked. “I would hate to think you were sleeping on the job.”

“Uh…” Naomi scrambled to get her sleep-sluggish brain to come up with something that sounded impressive before she realized something.

There was a tiny blinking at the top corner of her computer screen. It seemed to be indicating that it was partly through a long download.

Her hand snapped around the back of her neck, and her blood chilled.

There was a cord. A cord had been plugged into her neck while she’d slept. Straight into her cyber core. And it was currently attempting to download information from her.

She squinted, seeing that it wasn’t a download action, though. It was a sync action. Which meant at the same time Zoila was attempting to steal information from Naomi, she’d been stealing information from Zoila.

The fact tickled Naomi. Though she had no idea what she could do with that information at the moment, it still felt nice to get one over on the woman. She doubted Zoila knew it. No way would she have hooked up Naomi if she’d realized that was possible.

Even so, she shut down the exchange and ripped out the cord right as the trio approached her.

“Well, how did it go?” Zoila asked with false sweetness, ignoring the cord Naomi now held in her hand.

Naomi cleared her throat, trying not to look at Buzz. “Um, I read over as much as I could but wasn’t able to do anything constructive yet. There’s too much data to work with in one night.”

Zoila’s face twisted up into a scowl. “Pity.”

She snapped her fingers, and the two cyborgs restraining Buzz tightened their grip on him.

He squirmed and struggled, but he was no match for their strength as they took him to an experiment table that hadn’t been there when Naomi drifted off.

She knew it was an experiment table because it held no electronic components like the other tables did. It also had restraints along the sides that the cyborgs used to strap Buzz down.

And it also had a very mean mechanism hovering over it—pointing all sorts of needles, cords, and other tools straight down at Buzz.

“Get the fuck off me!”

Panic welled within Naomi’s chest. “I wasn’t lying. I swear I wasn’t lying! I didn’t do this to myself in a day! It takes longer than that.
